Quick Guide: Pool Heating Installation
Do you want to use your pool throughout the year, no matter the season? Pool heating is the solution for you. A pool heating system allows you to set your ideal pool water temperature, regardless of the weather outside.
If you are considering installing or upgrading your current pool heating system but aren’t sure where to start, this guide is for you.
Pool Assessment
The first step is to contact your local Poolwerx pool expert. Several different pool heating systems are available. Some are more energy efficient and have lower ongoing costs, whereas others work better in different climates. Before choosing a system, you need to decide which one suits you best.
Check out our blog discussing the various options for pool heating systems. Consult with your pool technician to discuss your preferences and requirements. They can suggest a suitable solution that aligns with your pool, lifestyle, and financial constraints.
Quote
Once you have decided on a pool heating system, your pool technician can provide a quote.
Considerations affecting the price of the quote include:
Type of heating system: Solar, gas heater, electric heat pump
Pool size
Above ground or in-ground pool
Space and area confinements
Equipment Pad Considerations
Space and Layout: Ensure there is adequate space on your equipment pad for the new heater. The layout should allow easy access for maintenance and repairs. Proper ventilation and clearance around the unit are crucial for safe operation.
Electrical Capacity: Verify that your current electrical system can handle the additional load of a pool heater, particularly for electric heat pumps. Upgrades to your electrical system may be necessary.
kW Considerations
Heating Capacity: The required heating capacity (measured in kilowatts or kW) will depend on your pool size and the desired temperature increase. Larger pools or those in cooler climates will require heaters with higher kW ratings.
Energy Efficiency: Higher kW heaters will heat the pool more quickly but may consume more energy. Balancing efficiency and operating costs is key.

Pool Heater Installation
Installation times will vary depending on the type of heating system you choose. Most pool heating systems can be installed in a day or two, but larger pools and varying climates may require up to three days for full heating. Here’s a quick guide on how each type of pool heating system is installed.
Gas Pool Heater
Install heater: Your technician will find the best place to install the heater, likely with the rest of the pool equipment.
Install plumbing: Piping will need to be installed to connect the heater to the pool filter.
Connect gas and electrical power: Your technician can help arrange a licensed gas plumber to hook up the gas line to the heater.
Electric Heat Pump
Install pool heater: Similar to the gas heater, your technician will find the best place to install the heater, likely with the rest of the pool equipment.
Install plumbing: Your technician will need to install a bypass pipe from the filter pump into the heat pump inlet and then back to the regular filter pump piping to enable water to pass through the heat pump.
Electrical installation: Residential pools usually only require a single-phase electrical installation, which should be completed by a certified electrician.
Enjoy Your Heated Pool!
Now comes the fun part! Once the pool heating system has been installed and your pool technician gives the all-clear, jump in and enjoy your pool!
